A drive up to Dryholaey wildlife park

A drive up to Dryholaey wildlife park

From the black sand beach, I noticed another beautiful rock formation by the sea. I didn’t have any detailed plans for the day, and had more than enough spare time to do a bit of exploring… so I saddled back up onto my trusty van-steed, put the drone batteries on the charger, and charged off myself.

The first thing I noticed when driving into Dryholaey wildlife park was the signs, very clearly stating that drones were NOT, in any way shape or form, allowed in the park boundaries.

That’s fine. I’m not sad. You’re sad. Shut up.

I pressed onward, though. I wasn’t going to miss out on getting to experience something pretty, just because I couldn’t let my small orange buddy take to the skies… I mean, I’d prefer to be able to share pretty pictures when I can, and sea stacks are definitely best views from the air… but hey. This trip is mainly an opportunity for me to stretch back out into my own soul, after being compressed down by jobs and life and Oregon, so…

Yeah, philosophy aside I pressed onward.

Even without Droney flying around, it was staggeringly beautiful. A huge window through a sea cliff soared below me, and countless birds cried and wheeled above – Looking around, I could tell why drones aren’t allowed in Dryholaey. It’s a bird sanctuary, with thousands nesting in the cliffs below where I was parked.

I wandered, explored… and moseyed onward.

I did, I admit, fly the drone a little bit after I left the bounds of the park. I didn’t even consider flying back toward the nesting grounds, obviously, but I did get some beautiful pictures of an abandoned farmhouse nearby!

My friends come to visit – A day at the coast!

Ohh man… it’s been a while since I’ve gotten to hang out with Dave! I think the last time was when I was still living in Hood River… and all I really remember was that we had a fire on the porch, wrapped Dave up in a sheepskin rug, and had him pose with a dwarven sword and a battle axe.

Those’re the kind of things we remember.

Anyways, Dave and his wife Lakay came to visit in May!

Twilight isn’t an ocean movie… but it did have a scene shot at Ecola Beach (supposedly), so there we found our destination for the day!

Breakfast was found… out? Somewhere? Huh. I can’t actually quite recall what we did for breakfast… maybe we did something quick at home? Interesting. We did something, at least, I’m pretty sure.

Anyways we went to the beach. Heck yeah!

We started the day off at Cannon, since that’s an absolutely eponymous Oregon landmark. Haystack rock, yo!

We walked, I flew the drone a safe distance from the birdys, we chatted, and we found a whole slew of gorgeous roses floating in the surf. I rocked the photography, Lakay got to dip her toes in a new Ocean, and it was an amazing adventure.

It even included crepes!

From Cannon, we headed to Ecola – supposedly the spot where they shot a few scenes from Twilight, but we weren’t quite sure… a few movie details didn’t quite add up, but you know what? Who cares – we had a blast, we got to explore and experience a glorious day… what more could you want?

After the adventures, we did a fun light dinner with Jess, before enjoying our last few hours before having to head back to the airport for a Sunday-night red-eye. We caught up, ate great food, and I couldn’t have been more thankful for the excellent weekend.

A hike to the Coast! The return of Cape Falcon!

The last few weekends, I’ve been up in the mountains. Snow, cold weather, beautifully crisp air… I love it.

Sometimes, we need a change of scenery though – Sticking with the theme of the weekend, I was hiking with a friend today, and she’d gotten into a crash while snowboarding back on Friday… so she wasn’t quite feeling like hanging out in the snow, which is rather understandable after cracking your helmet after flying through a whiteout.

We went in the other direction, trading cold snow and crisp air for warm breezes and salt spray!

Falcon’s Crest is a fairly short hike, with a surprising amount of mud in that short hike… but it’s a beautiful few miles, with light elevation gain and excellent views. The trees are covered in Moss, the forest is lush and green throughout the year… and while you can’t quite smell the sea air, you can still somehow sense that the ocean is nearby. Maybe it’s the subtle noise of the breakers, or the salt tint to the breeze… I couldn’t quite put a finger on it, but it’s still always an amazing feeling.

We hiked in, avoided as much mud as we could, and enjoyed a nice snack out on the point overlooking the waves.

We hiked back, rested for a while on a bench by the beach, and watched the surfers rock the breaking waves. Having Aliona along, I got to learn quite a bit about the surfers… or more accurately, the waves that they were chasing. That’s what I love about meeting new people, and spending time with friends – you can always learn more about something, if you have someone along for the ride to talk to.

Every activity has such surprising depth to it, and I truly love getting to learn the intricacies behind why people are doing what they’re doing.

After beach-gazing for a while, we headed back to the parking lot for a quick snack before driving back to town – Aliona pulled out a full camp cooking kitchen from the back of her car, and I got to enjoy a rather amazing late-lunch of indian-spiced ramen noodles. Not something I’ve ever thought to try, but it was gloriously delicious – smooth, spicy… an excellent end to a beautifully salt-sprayed day!
