An afternoon and evening on Cannon Beach

After a day hiking out in the Snow on Mt. Hood, I felt the need to switch it up, and embrace one of the many excellent attributes of Oregon. I felt the need to go to the beach.

The morning found me brunching at a new spot in town, which has the best BLTs I’ve had in years, sipping a latte and getting myself ready for the adventure. I wasn’t running; instead, I was aiming for a later start than normal with a goal of finishing my walk after dark had fallen on the beach.

Not quite sure why I had this goal, but… you know what, we embrace the gut feelings that we’ve got, and sometimes we find some excellent adventures along the ride.

This time was one of those times.

I got to Cannon around… 2:00, maybe? With approximately three hours left before sunset. I mean, less… but three hours of light, at least. My goal was to use all that light up walking outbound – then, I’d turn around once the sun was down, trekking my way back in the dark.

The plan went smoothly. The tide was out (not a surprise, that was why I went on Saturday, vs. Friday or Sunday), so I had an endless beach surrounding me to walk on. The sand was well-packed, the views were beautiful, and I even flew the drone a bit to get some pictures of myself.

The sun dipped down, then fully sank below the horizon, and I turned back to town and warmth.

The hike back was glorious. I’ve spoken about hiking after dark before, how your whole world condenses and focuses down to a small pool of warm light, shining from a headlamp into the darkness… this was absolutely one of those times. The endless beach surrounding me, the light fog rising up from the warm sand into the cold night air, the immense distance between surf and full shore… I legitimately couldn’t tell where the sand ended and the sky began.

My world wasn’t just focused into the thin ray of my headlamp… it devolved and unfocused into a well of grey. The sand, the horizon, the sky… I couldn’t tell the difference. I had to check my GPS every so often to make sure I was still moving, still heading toward my destination… still on Earth, even.

It gave me space to think, to disconnect, and to let my thoughts wander.

I could have strayed further toward the surf, or to the shoreline, to get a handrail for my senses… but I chose not to. I was enjoying this sense of limbo, of slowly walking through the infinite plains of purgatory. It lasted long enough for me – The lights of town started shining through the fog just as my mind was starting to miss the stimulation of the world.

It was lovely.

My friends come to visit – A day at the coast!

Saturday and Sunday, 20-May-2023 and 21-May-2023

Ohh man… it’s been a while since I’ve gotten to hang out with Dave! I think the last time was when I was still living in Hood River… and all I really remember was that we had a fire on the porch, wrapped Dave up in a sheepskin rug, and had him pose with a dwarven sword and a battle axe.

Those’re the kind of things we remember.

Anyways, Dave and his wife Lakay came to visit in May!

Twilight isn’t an ocean movie… but it did have a scene shot at Ecola Beach (supposedly), so there we found our destination for the day!

Breakfast was found… out? Somewhere? Huh. I can’t actually quite recall what we did for breakfast… maybe we did something quick at home? Interesting. We did something, at least, I’m pretty sure.

Anyways we went to the beach. Heck yeah!

We started the day off at Cannon, since that’s an absolutely eponymous Oregon landmark. Haystack rock, yo!

We walked, I flew the drone a safe distance from the birdys, we chatted, and we found a whole slew of gorgeous roses floating in the surf. I rocked the photography, Lakay got to dip her toes in a new Ocean, and it was an amazing adventure.

It even included crepes!

From Cannon, we headed to Ecola – supposedly the spot where they shot a few scenes from Twilight, but we weren’t quite sure… a few movie details didn’t quite add up, but you know what? Who cares – we had a blast, we got to explore and experience a glorious day… what more could you want?

After the adventures, we did a fun light dinner with Jess, before enjoying our last few hours before having to head back to the airport for a Sunday-night red-eye. We caught up, ate great food, and I couldn’t have been more thankful for the excellent weekend.

A brunch, A hike, and an excellent Saturday

Since I went to the mountain the day before, clearly I would be going to the coast today, right?

Right. Clearly, the only option!

The day started out deliciously – meeting a friend for brunch at Pine State Biscuits. I’d be starting a series of early-morning hikes soon enough, so I was absolutely relishing the chance to sit down and have a nice slow social morning… the excellent biscuits and fried chicken were just icing on the cake!

After brunch we headed West, toward the land of infinite sand.

Just like a hike, there isn’t really much to talk about for a beach walk. I mean… we walked. On the beach. At one point we stopped to make sandwiches, and at a point a little bit later we turned around and started walking back. We watched the sunset, got ice cream, and then headed back to the car.

The story, as they say, is in the pictures.

(Ed Note: Do they really say that? I don’t know… I think Ben’s making things up again. But that’s fine, because pictures.)

The day wasn’t over though, and didn’t finish with the setting Sun.

While driving home, a question was asked. “Have you stargazed recently?”

We thought, and I realized something. It’s been ages since I’ve stargazed, and… as loath as I am to admit it… I’ve never laid out on the hood of a car and stared into the cosmos.

Clearly, an unacceptable state of affair. And thankfully, one easily remedied by a quick exit from the main road followed by a quick search of the car’s maps for a spot by a river, and finished up with a blanket on the cooling hood of the car.

An excellent day.
