Adventure time, come on grab your friends

So this may not mean a lot on its surface… But I finished watching Adventure Time on a cold Monday in December.

I’ve loved this series since… God… Since I first saw it in 2010? It was what I watched in Venezuela when I was homesick, and in Sao Paulo when I was in that detention center, and when I missed hanging out with you all when I was in New Zealand.

I watched episodes when I was apprehensive / scared driving into Oregon, and then Sarah and I watched it together by the fire before shit got bad between us.

It’s got 10 seasons, but I’d never made it past season 9… ’till now.

And now… It’s done. It was a good ending – fun, happy, and well written. But… Damn. Just, damn.

I’mma pour a generous glass of scotch and stand in the cold on my balcony for a bit, I think.

A visit to the Portland Art Museum

Man… Something I miss about Boston is the museums. I grew up more spoiled than I realized until recently… I’d always taken it as gospel that any museum needs at least a few hours to visit, and that every museum would have some cool hidden rooms to discover if you spent enough time searching.

Man.

The Portland Art Museum is amazing, don’t get me wrong! It’s got amazing exhibits, great native artwork, and excellent local craft. But… it doesn’t have much of any of them. That, or maybe I’m quicker to walk through these days? Either way, I was surprised at just how quickly I finished up at the art museum. Even with my walking speed cut down by the recent surgery (yay wisdom teeth being hauled out of my head), I was done in about an hour… and even then, I’d stretched it pretty far.

If I may taint this post with a bit of art criticism, though… Which I obviously may, since this is my blog and I do what I want…

This following piece bothers me. I find its existence questionable enough, but the fact that it’s featured in a city-scale museum is a… creative decision. Hear me out. I love the original piece. It’s a landmark photograph capturing a historic moment in time, beautifully capturing the raw hypocrisy of hatred . Obviously – it won a Pulitzer price!

But the update to it… Okay. The glass beads are neat. Highlighting details is… interesting. But the author isn’t highlighting some missed side piece. The author’s “highlighting” the literally centerpiece of the photo. It’s like if I posted a photo of the sailor kissing the woman in times square, and drew a big red circle around the couple.

I mean… yeah. Congrats, Ben, you get the intent of the original piece. That’s the whole point, isn’t it?

Anyways. Rant Off.

Having my jaw hacked apart… Or, simply put, having my wisdom teeth extracted

With Thanksgiving over, I didn’t have any excuses left.

I’d delayed getting my wisdom teeth out for years. Wasn’t an emergency, they didn’t hurt, COVID had cancelled appointments… all of the reasons for not just getting it done and over with had gone. I’d even used Thanksgiving as a reason to delay – Can’t be unable to eat solid food during Thanksgiving, could I?

Well.

That was gone and done. No reasons left to delay, I guess.

My friend took me to the appointment, shepherded me home, and then kept me from napping until the requisite 8 hours had passed post-anesthesia. I’d prepared jello, milkshakes, and yoghurt for myself… but frankly only felt like the jello, since it was nice and cold. And, you know, drooling blood for a few hours kind of kills your appetite.

As a quick note, I can’t quite remember taking these pictures.
Supposedly I sent at least two “surgery went okay!” texts to my whole family.
While semi-lucid with Anastasia, I ranted about how excited I was to eat pancakes, and got in trouble for bringing my pocket knife to the doctors.

All in all… I’ll take it.
