A breather in Bulgaria – Cape Kaliakra and the Black Sea

Standard

Wednesday, 03-Sept-2025, through Saturday, 06-Sept-2025

Up the coast we drove, from the Southern part of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast up toward the Northern side.

We were heading toward a spot on the Northern shore for another few days, getting to visit with Andrea’s family for a bit. The goals were basically the same, though – relax, enjoy, and take a good breather from the chaos of Dublin city life.

Along the way we got to see Cape Kaliakra, an ancient fortress on a small peninsula jutting into the sea, above sheer cliffs with crashing waves… absolutely beautiful, and a really cool opportunity for the English-speaker to see a bit more of Bulgaria’s history.

But overall? We relaxed by the pool, ate amazing food, and just… were.

Parc De Bruxelles

Just a quick note on this one – a beautiful park that I wandered about while catching up with my sister on the phone, while on the way to the art museum in Brussels.

It was lovely, simply massive, and all of the statues had this gorgeous partial covering of moss on them… they reminded me of what I feel like a park would look like a few years after being abandoned by humanity, and maybe they are? I couldn’t find any placards to explain them, or their current state, so it remains a slight mystery to me.

That somehow just adds to the mystique, though, so I won’t complain and I’ll absolutely enjoy reminiscing about walking along the quiet paths in the heart of the capital of the European Union.

The parks of Riga, and the flowers of Latvia

Standard

Various days, from Monday, 10-June-2024, through Saturday, 15-June-2024

I adored the riverfront parks in Riga.

And, as June kicked into gear, the flowers seemed to love them too – so many flowers adding color to so many beautifully solid sculptures… I don’t know exactly what style of art these sculptures are (Soviet realism? Brutalist? Modern Classical?), but I know that they’re solid, and that they look really cool when contrasted with bright flowers and beautiful growing things.

I took these photos over the course of my wanderings around Riga – I didn’t set out to see any specific pieces, and simply found them as I explored and meandered my way around the city. It seemed like everywhere I turned there was another cool statue of sculpture to see, and they definitely helped me add more than a few miles to my sneakers.
