Last Day in Edinburgh! Natural History Museum of Scotland!

Friday, 30-Dec-2017

Our last day in the seat of Scotland… awww…

We’re not ones to give up easily though. We were packed and out the door of the apartment nice and early, intent on tracking down a good breakfast and some great artwork. Also – historic exhibits. Also… yeah, mostly just those three. Because we were on our way to the Natural History Museum of Scotland!

First, we had breakfast. I ate a full Scottish fry up. It was tasty… yes, even the Haggis. I mean, I wouldn’t order it exclusively, and I don’t think I’ll ever have it again, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected sheep lung to be. But yeah. Breakfast. Then, onward to the museum!

Not as large or as famous (at least in my knowledge) as the London Natural History Museum, this one was actually notably more pleasant, in my opinion. Subtle things, like the design of exhibits and the flow of traffic mean a lot in a museum, and London had missed the mark pretty hard on those – whereas Scotland struck them right on. The exhibits in Scotland weren’t as impressive or rare, to be sure, but they were more enjoyable, and the museum itself was a more pleasant experience.

We all split up to wander our own ways, and I took a circuitous route through a few bits that I thought would be interesting – A robotics exhibit, a whole section on Pacific Island culture, and even taking the elevators all the way up to the top, for a look out over the city from the parapets.

It was a little tough though, by the end, knowing that we only had a few hours to explore. Museum’s like this, they need days. They need you to live in the town, and go visiting on random weekends. A few hours in obviously not enough, but I feel like I’d still have missed out on the cool random rooms even if we’d spent a full day dedicated to the museum. Not a reason to skip it, not at all! But still, a small bit of sadness that I had.

18-March fancy dinner

Friday, 18-March-2016

In Boston, we’ve got lobster. We’ve got chowder and delicious seafood. But crab isn’t really part of that delicious seafood. So when Sarah told me that she wanted to go to a fancy crab place… Hell yeah!

The dinner destination was Jack’s Crawfish; a place that Sarah has taken her folks to a while back, and that supposedly had the most massive plate of crab legs that anyone could ever want. And the best part? The weather was finally nice, and it was close enough to bike to!

We hopped into semi-fancy clothes, got onto the bikes, and rode to meet our delicious, butter-covered destiny. Our destiny served on a platter. Our destiny was crab legs.

And they were delicious! We had fried calamari to start out though, so by the time we were done we could barely move… Which was a two-fold bummer. First: we didn’t have room for dessert. Which would have been a chocolate box full of berries and fudge. Second: we still had to bike home.

The first problem was sad, but we got over it quickly since the food that filled our bellies up was amazing. The second problem… Well, what do you do when you can’t bike home? You go to the book store and peruse!

So we looked around Powell’s – alternating between looking for my Aunt’s gardening books, and reading behind the scenes books about the art of Mad Max. Sarah has some really awesome insights into those books, FYI. Advantage to working in that field for so long, it seems 🙂

Then, home. But not biking. Because we were still stuffed. We tried to take the MAX (the Portland equivalent of the MBTA or the BART), but it wasn’t running frequently enough (every 45min), so we just ended up walking. And then got passed by two MAX trains that hadn’t shown up on the schedule. Clearly.

Still. Worth it.

A random, yet fun, Weekend in 2014. July, specifically.

This is super out of order – it’s part of my series called “cleaning up my drafts folder”

Home, dinner with Mike & Chirag.  Steaks = delicious

Chill, try to have a fire… doesn’t really work too well, for some ass-reason.

Saturday, 26-July-2014

Chirag & Erica show at my place, we hit Andy’s for brunch (making jokes about Loch Ness Monstah wanting tree-fiddy), and then get a bill… with a tax of exactly $3.50

Side-note: I do the thing where someone’s trying to tell me that I can’t do something, but I just smile, nod, and say that I can.  Cashier doesn’t want to make change for #1 (for parking) for people who aren’t eating there…

Me – “Can I have change for the meter?”

Her – “We only give change to customers”

M – “Cool.  Here’s a dollar.”

H – “But… only customers”

M – “I know.  Hence why I’m giving you a dollar”

H – “But…”

M – “Ohh!  I’m a customer.  I am sitting with my friends who are right there.  Give me quarters”

H – ” Ok here you go.”

Eat, chat, then on the road to Archery!

Ace Archery = fun, Erica = stressed, Mike = annoyingly good at it.  Chirag hits other peoples targets “by accident”

<Insert chart here>

Drop Chirag off, then eat in Malden, then drop Erica off.  Good-ish burgers, great frappes, fun times.

Chill with Mike in Cambridge, then head to Faneiul Hall for food & beer.

Oysters & beers, followed by wandering, followed by Cigars & Scotch, followed by trying Lucky’s (“Are you coming back?” “My friend just got vomited on.  What do you think?”), then home to sleep

Sunday, 27-July-2014

Brunch @ Foundry… I come here too often.  Chef chats some more, and the waitress doesn’t believe that Snoop sold weed to Cameron Diaz.

Chill @ home again, then go to the climbing gym.  Work out a lot, it’s a good day.

Jacuzzi, then eating excellent food.
