Movie Review: Pacific Rim

Standard

This is the best movie ever.  It is completely unapologetic about what it is… and what it is, is simply a movie where robots (Jaegers) fight monsters (Kaiju).  In whatever awesome way that the producers could think of at the time.

Physics doesn’t come into it, and engineering has no place in this movie.  Sure, there are some points where you’re thinking to yourself, “Hey, that would be a good way to make a huge robot work”… but those moments are far eclipsed by the sheer amount of artistic license taken by the screenwriters.

There’s a scene where the “main” Jaeger uses a cargo ship as a baseball bat, and beats the fear of ‘Murica into a Kaiju.  Obviously this wouldn’t work – this ship would simply snap in half.

They “tap into” the “rear brain” of the monster, referencing how dinosaurs would have secondary brain in their tail.  Not so true, according to recent discoveries, such as the one that disproved the Brontosaurus.

But you know what?  I am 100% ok with every liberty that they took.  BECAUSE IT WAS AWESOME.  Scenes where they use rocket engines on the Jaegers elbow to make a punch hit faster.  When they “vent the reactor out the front port” to act as a jet to slow a fall.  Where a 50+ story robot falls from outer space and lands in a football stadium, yet does no damage to surrounding buildings nor to the human pilots.  I just don’t care how unfeasible it it.  It is fun, and it’s amazing, and everyone should watch it twice.

Gear Review: Cloudsplitter jacket

Standard

http://www.ems.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11021470

I haven’t bought a new jacket in years.  Instead, I tend to layer – underarmor, fleece jackets, and rain shell.  It’s easier to adapt for the temperature, but they’re a bit bulky, and annoying to bike in…

So as of this year, I finally threw down and headed out to EMS to check out the jacket selection.  I asked some friends, checked them out in the store, then went home and did a bit of research.  Then I decided to head into the store and buy the Cloudsplitter, because the name is awesome.  Ohh, and it came really well recommended.

And in the few weeks since I bought it… I’ve been quite happy!  Hiking has been solid, and biking works well too.  It’s waterproof (at least in the light rain/snow that I’ve dealt with so far), and the fleece lining is SUPER comfortable and cozy. Even holds up pretty well to the wind when I’m driving – since this is Me we’re talking about, and I drive with the top down in my car when it’s well below freezing.

My only complaint is that it’s a bit bad with heat management… in the cold it’s quite nice, but when I get warmer (like when I’m biking around) it gets a bit too toasty.  And then I get sweaty. And in terms of breathability… well, we may be lacking a bit there.  I find myself unzipping the front zipper a lot while biking to and from work, even in the mornings when it’s significantly into the freezing temperatures.

Overall though?  Yeah.  I’d recommend it.

Exploring the Nashoba Valley Vineyard

Standard

Saturday, 30-Nov-13

So for our post-Thanksgiving adventure, my family went out to Nashoba Valley vineyards on Saturday!

  • We leave Medway early afternoon, after a rather relaxed morning of sleeping late and eating turkey leftovers.  We’re aiming to stop by Bolton Orchards before the vineyards, so we leave just barely enough time to make it to the reservation that we’ve got.
  • Mom and I drive together, and have a nice chance to chat and catch up just the two of us.  We almost never get this, since dinners are usually a family thing, or at the smallest Her, my Grandma, and myself.  It’s nice.
  • Bolton = smells like cider, and has fresh cooked donuts.  Yes please!
  • J’s Restaurant at the Winery
    • Ohh wow… fancy!  And here I am not at all dressed up
    • Great food and amazing beer
    • Have a flight of beers
    • share game chili and BBQ quesadillas with Sue
    • Amazing and delicious
  • Everyone goes for the wine tasting, but I’m feeling kinda blah, and have to drive afterward… so I go for a short walk instead.  Catch up on texting people, along with exploring the actual winery
  • Wander around some more
  • Drive back to Medway, fun times are had by all
  • Hannukah again
  • Roll back to Boston!
