March, 2024 – Filling in the Details
With the first steps of planning complete, I had a general sketch laid out of where I was going, and when I’d be going there. That’s a great start, but it’s not nearly enough to sustain me on the adventure. An actual trip needs details – flights need to be booked, reservations made, and travel times accounted for. The Eurail map is great, but… not enough on its own.
So I started at the beginning.
I mentioned slow and methodical planning, in Part 2… and that was the name of the game. Over two weeks, I worked line by line through the plan. I booked tickets to Greenland, and then onward to Iceland. I worked item by item – I’d lock in the book-ends of a city first, ensuring that I knew when I’d arrive and when I’d leave, and then I’d book the place to stay.
In Greenland, I booked the tickets arriving and then departing. Only then did I book a place to stay.
The same for Iceland – The flight there was already booked, thanks to Greenland, so I only had to book the outbound flight. Then I locked in a place to stay in Reykjavik, then booked a campervan for a few days, and then booked the same place in Reykjavik to stay before my outbound flight.
Norway, Sweden, and Finland followed suit.
I ran into my first issue getting from Stockholm to Helsinki – turns out, even though the Eurail shows a connection between the two… that’s just saying that a connection exists. Not that you can book it via the Eurail. I took a short break to recompose myself, and then forged ahead. Found a ferry / cruise ship that goes between the two, booked it, and then found my place to stay in Stockholm.
The Baltic states were next – another ferry, and another “the Eurail doesn’t cover this area” situation. Busses were the name of the game in the Baltics, and after another rest / cool-down period for myself to recompose after getting quite frustrated that the Eurail map is BLATANTLY not telling the whole story, I got busses booked and hotels reserved.
As a side note – don’t get a Eurail pass. They’re not worth it. I should fight it, and cancel my pass, but… I’m holding onto it just in case it becomes useful. But seriously – the Eurail is not NEARLY as helpful as it makes itself out to be, at least when you’re outside Germany / France / Austria / Switzerland.
I took my time, taking Europe chunk by chunk.
I locked down the Nordic states, then confirmed everything. I locked down the Baltics, then confirmed. Central Europe came next, and was (surprise surprise) double-checked. Then Western Europe, and on into Ireland. Central and Western Europe did have a lot of Eurail connections, but included a few flights too, for simplicities sake. That’s one of the many little things I’m excited for, with living in Europe – flights are just so much simpler and cheaper than here in the States.
I finished near the end of March… giving myself a few days break to relax after booking the final flight into Dublin. My next steps are to confirm everything a second time, create contingency plans, and lock down emergency contacts for the various countries. Then I’ll need to confirm healthcare coverage, details for settling into Dublin… and then start selling and storing my various possessions.
Slowly but surely. Step by step.

Thanksgiving, 2023
Friday, 17-Nov-2023 through Sunday, 26-Nov-2023
A few years back, I started up a rotation for Thanksgiving – Massachusetts, Arizona, Friends, repeat. 2020 was “Massachusetts”, in a virtual sense… 2021 was a flight down to Arizona for a lovely high-desert turkey dinner, and then 2022 found me driving down to Sacramento for a dinner that couldn’t be beat. This year, I flew out East for an equally unbeatable meal… combined well with a week of family and friends!
It’s hard to summarize an entire week in a blog, without rambling on too long or simplifying it to the point of missed joy… but I’ll try, keeping it short and sweet so as to not steal time and energy from the other posts and photos that deserve posting and attention.
So let’s see…
I flew out early – taking the full week to visit with everyone in Medway. I worked remotely, with many thanks to my sister for loaning me her work from home setup while she was in the office. It was lovely – and I definitely understand why so many people are so protective of their freedom to work remotely. On top of the joy of just relaxing and working all under the same roof… My friend Bri flew out to join us! This was her first year joining us, and it was awesome to be able to bring her along and share some of the Eigner family Thanksgiving fun with her!

I got to meet up with friends! Dillon and Liz, getting to have a lovely mid-workday lunch, and see their awesome new home, along with hitting my first climbing gym ever with Daniel and Bri! Turns out, the grades there are surprisingly similar to those in Portland… which is neat, since a few years back they were radically different. Advantage of a more interconnected world, maybe?

My Mom, Bri, Hannah, and I had a spa night! It was excellent, and led to some… slightly horrifying… group photos. No regrets, and they’ll make excellent Halloween decorations for next year.

Thanksgiving itself was in Amherst, at my Aunt and Uncle’s house. I got to spend some excellent time with my cousin and her kids, and even let him fly the drone around a bit! Amazing food, excellent times… It really was a gift to be able to see everyone in person and spend time just relaxing and catching up.

Second Thanksgiving in Medway was, also unsurprisingly, glorious! My sister cooked up a storm, with assistance of course, making a stellar second meal along with dangerously decadent desserts.

We took a hike to the Stoney Brook, the Audubon society camp where I spent summers for ages and ages. It’s just as lovely as I remember it being, and was a great walk (literally) down memory lane.

I brought the drone along! As mentioned, my cousin’s son has a blast flying it around… and it did a pretty good job of getting a few aerial photos of everyone!

A wedding weekend! Part 1 – The Flight, and the pre-wedding prep
Wednesday, 03-Nov-2021 through Monday, 08-Nov-2021
My friends Dillon and Liz are getting married!!! It’s been on the books for a while now, so it’s kind of strange to think that it’s finally happening… but this is the weekend! This is the day!
The bachelor party was a hit, the suit was tailored, and anything that I needed had already been bought. The photobook was made, and I’d checked in with Dillon and Liz to make sure there wasn’t anything else left that I could help with. My speech was mostly written, and I was as ready as I’d ever be.
All that was left was to show up, and help out in any way that I could!
Wednesday & Thursday, 03-Nov-2021
I walked into the Providence Library, where Dillon and Liz were holding the rehearsal ceremony, wearing a cloak. My wizards staff tapped pace beside me, on the hard marble floor. Onlookers gawked, Dillon grinned, and Liz stood agape.
Slowly, people looked over… and a fit of giggles wracked the room.
Now don’t quote me too directly on those details – I’m pretty sure that’s what happened, but bear in mind that I was wearing a cloak and carrying a wizards staff. So my recollection of specific details may be a bit fuzzy due to the magical aura surrounding me.
<Magical rewind to the beginning of the trip>
The weekend of my friends wedding was finally here! I was the Best Man for Dillon and Liz, who were getting married in Providence, Rhode Island, and it was my job to help make sure things happened right. Liz and Dillon had planned everything out beautifully, and I was on-station to just help un-tangle whatever unexpected tangles happened.
Knowing that everything would be busy and hectic, I conferred with Dillon as I was packing up my suitcases, “I feel like the rehearsal may need some levity… Liz said I could wear anything I want, so what do you think about a wizard outfit?” “Yes! Do it!” And into my bag, the cloak went.

I flew into Boston on Wednesday, landing just about Midnight. My Stepdad picked me up, and we got the chance to catch up (and eat some amazing BBQ!) until mid-day on Thursday. Since the wedding was on Friday, Thursday evening was set aside for rehearsal, confirming details, and all the other pre-wedding things that needed to happen ahead of time.
It was an excellent day – Not a cloud in the sky, nice and cold… basically, a top-of-the-line New England Autumn day. The rehearsal went beautifully, the hotel was amazing, and the rehearsal dinner was super fun. I got to walk over with some friends I hadn’t seen in ages, got to meet the whole family at the dinner, and caught up with tons of people that I hadn’t seen in way too long.
As always, weddings are an amazing chance to catch up with everyone, and I’m absolutely grateful for the chance every time 🙂
