The Musee Granet

Standard

The two main attractions of Aix en Provence were the Méjanes library, and the Musee Granet.

The library was just a “walk up and check it out” situation, so we visited it first, after finding suitable parking… but the Musee, well, we had a feeling it may be a bit more of an adventure. We found some food, steeled ourselves, and charged inward to glorious art!

There was a lot of art.

Three floors of art, if I recall correctly, complete with a cool sub-basement that held (as is tradition) my favorite pieces in the museum. Not the most famous, or the weirdest, but definitely my favorites.

It was lovely; the main gallery was primarily religious, which isn’t quite my jam, but it was definitely interesting walking through and reading about all the details – Everything was purely in French, so I’ll include my translation-photos along for clarification. Of interesting note – one of the paintings, from 1661, is actually the first French portrait of a hunter! Kind of neat, showing how the vocation evolved over time.

Ohh also there was a sculpture of a guy without skin, from a doctor’s office in 1853. So… that’s a thing I’ve seen, now.

We perused, walked, explored, and enjoyed. We were able to make our way pretty much completely through the museum before getting saturated, too, which was a nice change of pace for me… by the time we were getting hungry, we’d finished up and were ready to head back to Cassis for some lovely dinner by the lapping waves.

Belvedere Castle – Schloss Belvedere

Yesterday, I’d had the opportunity to wander the gardens of Belvedere Castle – enjoying the views, the air, and the lovely sounds of the water features burbling away.

Today, I wanted to tour the castle itself.

I’ll admit that, after the emotional tribulation of the Vienna Museum, I was feeling a bit overstimulated and burnt out. Cafe Central had helped, since chocolates and hazelnuts always help, but… well, sweets and lattes could only carry the day so much.

They did give me the energy to forge onward, though, and so onward I forged into the heart of the castle. Perusing art, history, paintings and carvings. Modern and ancient, from the exhibit on the top floor dedicated to contemporary art to the tiny crucifix from the 12th century that is the oldest piece in the collection…

It was neat, but honestly not that much of a standout of a gallery. I enjoyed it, to be sure, but… Well, I’d go back to the Art History museum, or Natural History museum, in a heartbeat. But the Belvedere Castle… I think I’m good on, now.

The Vienna Natural History Museum – Naturhistorisches Museum Wien – Part 2 (The Art)

Is it strange that some of my favorite art is from the Natural History Museum?

I mean, it feels strange. But then again, my favorite style of art is representative landscapes, which are pretty natural and historical, so…

As strange as it feels, I was absolutely captivated by the art of the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Throughout the main museum they had paintings up, generally way up near the top of the rooms where they were quite hard to see, showcasing some of the places where the minerals and specimens on exhibit had been found.

It took me a few rooms before I even noticed them, but once I did I saw soaring mountains, deep open-pit mines, locations near Austria and as far away as the Badlands of the United States. Buildings, ancient civilizations… just absolutely beautiful pieces. Any of which I would adore to have copies of.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any postcards or other prints of these… and so, my own photography shall suffice to document the journey.
