Not strictly outdoor adventures, but sometimes parties take place outside! Or near a window! Thus: it counts.

Disorientation

Standard

Weekend from Thursday, 07-Aug-2025, through Saturday, 09-Aug-2025

When I started the MBA, we went to Orientation.

So, logically, now that the MBA is over, we should go to Disorientation, right?

I mean, I hadn’t considered the concept, but one of my classmates did, and planned a getaway, and invited everyone. And I’m definitely not someone to say no to the chance to get out of town and do some camping / escaping / enjoying the not-city.

So… Disorientation!

The plan was simple – I rented a car, we picked up a few of our friends, and we headed out toward Sligo on the Northwestern corner of the island. Our small group was aiming to arrive a day or so earlier than the rest – to set up and get oriented before we got disoriented with the whole group!

In the end, our planned group of 15+ turned into a small cadre of 7, give or take… a bit frustrating, to be sure, but it made for a really fun small-group adventure. We cooked, we walked around, and we went to a local traditional music night at a nearby pub. I lost my ring, I found my ring (after like 6 hours of searching), and much rejoicing occurred.

I even got to fly the drone a bit; both for my own enjoyment, and as a thank-you gift to the owner of the glamping spot we were staying in!

Pizza, Pocky, and Bladerunner!

Did you know, that I’ve somehow managed to miss having ever watched BladeRunner?

The original, that is. Pretty sure I’ve never seen it, and it’s just an absolute landmark of the Sci-Fi that I adore!

Combine this with the idea that I’d been wanting to do a movie night… and that Andrea, our friend Megan, and myself had meaning to do a movie night together… We booked the cinema, made amazing pizza (thanks to Andrea for cold-fermenting the dough!), Megan brought TONS of snacks, we popped some popcorn, and made an evening of it!

A trip into the Lord of the Rings

Saturday, 26-July-2025

Back during the MBA, one of the classes Andrea took found her (and her group) creating a project plan to scale up the operations and impact of a small nature sanctuary South of the city.

A Lord of the Rings themed nature sanctuary named Dorlindon.

Yes, I was incredibly jealous. Let’s move on.

Turns out – Dorlindon is located pretty close to the Great Sugar Loaf hike that we were doing on Saturday… and, interestingly, had an event going on that same afternoon!

With the hike complete, we popped back into the car and hit the road into Elvish Country.

Turns out, the “concert” was actually an acapella group singing in Elvish. It… I don’t know what I was expecting, but this definitely wasn’t it. No costumes, no musical accompaniment, no… I don’t know, no great feeling of magic? It was lovely, don’t get me wrong, and would have probably been much cooler had I understood Elvish, but… well.

I’m glad that we went, in any case. It was lovely getting to see the work that Dorlindon’s stewards have done, and it was a very cool opportunity to see something (and hear something) I never thought I’d see (or hear). If you’re ever in the region, dear readers, I’d heartily recommend a quick stop by.
