Thanksgiving in Arizona!

Standard

21-Nov-2021 through 27-Nov-2021

I finally got to visit my Dad and Stepmom in Arizona!

Now, first things first – I spent just about a week in Arizona. Usually, I’d break that amount of time up into three or five blog posts… but that honestly don’t quite fit the theme of the trip.

A lot of my trips are targeted trips – trips with a few very specific destinations or goals in mind. Like my Devil’s Tower trip, where I sectioned it off into days, drives, and climbing destinations.

But this time the goal was a bit different. Similarly to how I can’t quite craft a blog story around a hike, I don’t want to craft a long saga around this trip. The trip wasn’t about a saga, or a destination, or an activity. Instead, this trip was visiting family, relaxing, and getting to catch up on quality time and relaxation.

I needed it – I needed a chance to unplug a bit, and to spend quality social time without any specific goals or agendas.

So instead of reading a long diatribe about what we did each day… I welcome you, dear reader, to sit back and enjoy a few quick stories from the trip. A few lovely photos that were taken. And hopefully a bit of Thanksgiving (and early Christmas) cheer!

I flew in a tiny private jet!

I helped cut apart a tree that was blocking a trail!

I walked around at high elevation!

Other things!

Okay, for real though. We did a lot of awesome things, and I’m really thankful that we got to spend so much time just relaxing and visiting. It was amazing, and was absolutely what I needed as an escape from work. To start:

My Dad and Stepmom live out in the boonies. I don’t know if I can assert this enough – it’s a tiny town, with maybe a few hundred people, at exceptionally high elevation, and quite a few miles from the nearest major airport.

They love it, and I’m quite happy for them – but it did mean that getting to them wasn’t the simplest of challenges. I mean… okay, it really was actually. I went online, booked flights, and then everything else was simple. But what type of flight could I book to somewhere out in the boonies? Well… a private plane, it turns out.

There’s a small airline that flies specialty flights, on small 8-seater plane called a PC-12. Basically a small rich-person private airplane; not quite on the level of a Gulfstream… but sorta close? When I found out that’s what I’d be flying on… I got a little excited. Profile picture time!

Ohh, I also got some amazing views of the Cascades on the flight out. So… bonus!

Once I got up there, We leisurely set about relaxing and enjoying ourselves.

There were tons of 4-wheeler trails around the cabin, and while they’re pretty well traveled by both locals and out-of-town hunters… something they get a bit blocked up by fallen trees or the like. Thankfully, my Dad’s got all the gear needed to chop the tree into manageable chunks and clear the trail out!

It was my first time driving a 4-wheeler, as far as I can remember… though I do have some vague memories of driving a quad sometime when I was really young? Maybe? Ehh, either way. I had a blast! We cruised the trails, cleared the tree, and then cruised the rest of the trail to make sure nothing else new had fallen. A bit of rain dropped down to check in on us… but overarchingly the weather was absolutely stellar. Cold and clear – just like us New Englanders like!

We didn’t just take to the logging trails on the 4-wheeler, though. While it’s lovely and quick, I did miss the quiet of a normal hike… so we heeded Gandalf’s warning about stepping out your back door, and kept our wits about us as we hiked around the hills and mountains behind the cabin.

We didn’t go too far, of course, since we were at ~8,500ft elevation and on un-cleared trails, but where we did go was gloriously wild. I saw Elk bones, and even brought some antlers home to bring back to Oregon with me. I found a pelt, we saw the remnants of a fire from years back, and enjoyed some quality father & son time on the trail.

This was Thanksgiving, though, so obviously the meal needs to make an appearance!

That morning I learned how to cook biscuits and sausage gravy from Denise, and then… honestly, just mostly stayed out of the way. We helped out with a few errands, and with bringing things in and out as needed, but the chef was in her element and didn’t need any major assistance from anyone.

Cooking big meals like that is absolutely something I love doing, so being able to sit back and watch someone else twirl around the kitchen like a dervish is definitely something I appreciate – I have my own systems and procedures, so being able to compare them to someone else’s is absolutely a treat.

Ohh, and the meal?

Well, check out the pictures for yourself.

The only thing I’ll say is that the photos don’t do the taste justice… and the photos look pretty dang good, if I may say so myself.

We had Turkey. We had ham. We had all the sides and all the accompaniments that anyone could hope or ask for.

We had an amazing meal, with amazing people, and passed out amazed afterward.

As is tradition, after the meal we did some decorating.

And by “we did some”, I mean “My Dad and I carried boxes while Denise arranged, organized, and set up a simply staggering array of gorgeous ornaments and angels”. It was… honestly just impressive to see how quickly and how completely the house transformed.

Don’t get me wrong – I love my apartment, and I appreciated the house in Portland. But… I’ve never quite been able to replicate such a complete transformation, and it’s definitely something that I’m looking forward to doing once I have a house of my own. Seasonal decorating is awesome, and just such a sight to walk into the house to see.

For the rest… It was a lovely trip. We chatted, relaxed, slept in, watched movies, and even went out for some absolutely amazing pizza! An exceptional escape, for an exceptional Thanksgiving 🙂

A Thanksgiving adventure – Thanksgiving itself!

A Thanksgiving adventure – Thanksgiving itself!

Thanksgiving is going to be different this year. This is my first year being single in half a decade, and thanks to the COVID Pandemic it’s also the first year that I can’t travel, and don’t have any friends still in town. I’m flying solo, have a ton of vacation to burn, and am feeling energetic...

This year sucks.

I mean, okay. It doesn’t, actually. I’ve had some amazing personal growth, experiences, and I’m actually doing pretty okay, all things considered.

But certain aspects of this year really do suck. Like, they suck so much.

I love Thanksgiving. I love seeing everyone, feeding everyone, and I love the fact that it’s so tradition-oriented… I don’t have to wonder what I should be cooking, or what I should be doing… it’s pretty straight forward. Make a turkey, some stuffing, eat it all while talking with friends and family I haven’t seen in ages, and then nap on the couch.

Ideally by a fire. Probably after having a glass of some interesting drink.

But this year… that can’t quite happen.

At my office, we have a map out in the front of the building. States are marked either green or red, depending on how many positive COVID tests they have, as a percentage of all tests administered. Over the weeks, the map’s gone from mostly green, to mixed, to a bit of red, and now it’s almost completely red.

When someone visits a state marked red, that’s okay… but it’s one more tick-mark on the checklist of “do I have to isolate for 14 days?”… and with all the other issues we’re having that means that if I left Oregon, and saw anyone else, I couldn’t go back into the office for at least 14 days.

My friends in Portland were off with their families, extended well past my little social bubble.

So, I’m home alone for Thanksgiving, for the first time ever.

So I cooked an amazing meal, set up a video call, and visited virtually with as many family members as I could 🙂

My meal was, admittedly, 95% pre-bought.

I had to cook all of it, of course, and I did make a few of the courses myself, but the majority of the dishes were bought from the Multnomah County Whiskey Library. Not… quite the place I’d expected to get a Thanksgiving dinner… but then again, I’d kind of expected to be having Thanksgiving with friends in Oklahoma or California this year. Or, at least the most recent plan of going to visit my Dad and StepMom is Arizona.

But plans and expectations aside, I made do, and had an excellent time.

Turkey, stuffing, squash, brussel sprouts, everything was laid out and enjoyed while chatting with everyone over Zoom. You know, it was really nice. And I’ll admit… being able to just clean everything up quickly afterward, and then pass out on the couch by the fire, after a nice Thanksgiving walk?

There are some traditions that you can keep anywhere, and anytime.

Thanksgiving in Medway, 2018

Thanksgiving, 2018, Visiting Medway!

Saturday, 17-Nov-2018 through Tuesday, 27-Nov-2018

For Thanksgiving, Sarah and I have been cycling through a three-year plan. We alternate between Thanksgiving in Medway, Thanksgiving with Sarah’s family, and Friendsgiving with our friends. Last year was the lovely-yet-chaotic friendsgiving, where we hosted people at our house and had the kitchen piping explode, so we were quite excited for this years Thanksgiving in Medway.

Obviously, ten days is way too much to put into a single blog post… but failing to write this down would be horribly remiss of me, because I absolutely want to remember it in the future.

As a trade, I’ve created the rough sketch below, to give history an idea of what adventures went down, and will be letting the attached photos stand mostly for themselves:

Saturday, 17-Nov

  • Our flight to Medway. We dropped Ollie off at camp in the morning, and then spent the rest of the day before our flight relaxing and finalizing our packed bags. We didn’t arrive in Boston until nearly midnight, but thankfully my Mom and Steve were stoically waiting for us.

Sunday, 18-Nov

  • Morning was simply relaxing, decompressing, and catching up. We had a lovely breakfast at home, sipped coffee, and chatted and hunt out. I think we did a quick walk, even.
  • Evening was dinner with the East Coast Lydeckers! Sarah’s Uncle and Aunt had just recently moved to Cambridge to be closer to their children & grandchildren; they’d actually moved right down the street from where I used to live, interestingly enough. Since they were close by, we drove into the city to meet and greet and all have an lovely evening of dinner and chatting.

Monday, 19-Nov

  • Bolton Orchard and Nashoba Valley Winery! I mean, we did also have breakfast and such, but it was pretty simple and relaxing, so nothing really to speak about. The real fun was our trip searching for apple cider donuts and wine.
  • We started at Bolton Orchards – an apple orchard in the town of Bolton that has an amazing general store. They have everything, but our goals were specifically to pick up various thanksgiving ingredients, and to eat donuts! Unfortunately, we arrived just 20 minutes too late for hot apple cider donuts; the donuts were still quite fresh, but they weren’t quite the same as “fresh off the machine”-fresh. Still, delicious.
  • Next up was Nashoba winers, a really cool winery nestled in the nashoba valley that specializes in fruit wines. As such, it’s quite different than the wineries that we have in Oregon, and is a favorite or my Mom and Steve.

Tuesday, 20-Nov

Tuesday was our prep day – Hannah made it into Medway by the late morning, if I remember correctly, and then we all plotted out a menu and then headed to the grocery store to pick up the bits that we still needed. Mostly a restful day, with a little bit of high-octane planning thrown in for good measure.

Wednesday, 21-Nov

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving… I wonder what we could possibly have done…

Ohh right! A bajillion recipes, a flurry of kitchen adventure, and more than a little bit of hectic preparation. Also a few walks to escape said hectic preparation…

Wednesday, for all it’s energy, was a gloriously relaxing day. We had our timetable for cooking, and mostly stuck to it – when we weren’t in the kitchen, we were relaxing by the fire, reading a book, or just enjoying the peace and quiet.

Thursday, 22-Nov

Thanksgiving!

The most family day of the year here in the States, so obviously our first course of action was for Sarah and I to drive out and pick up my Grandma, and ferry her back to Medway for the main meal. It was lovely, as driving with her always is, getting to catch up and hear stories about how everyone in Brookhaven was doing. We chatted, heard family Thanksgiving stories (some old, some new, and all appreciated), and the drive went quickly.

Dinner itself was exactly what we’d expect it to be – a huge feast, where we devoured food for the first 15minutes, and then quickly slowed down to a more sane pace while talking and nibbling.

Afterward, we cleaned up, worked on the puzzle (because Eigner/Hutt/Price family Thanksgivings always have a puzzle), and the had dessert. Then Sarah and I spent a lovely drive bringing my Grandma back home.

One nice surprise was that Sarah and I were able to give her brother a call in the evening! Australia time and New England time synched up beautifully, so we were able to chat and catch up for a while, which was an excellent surprise, and a great way to end the evening.

Friday, 23-Nov

Slow breakfast, decompress after Thanksgiving

Wander around Medway a bit, then chat in the kitchen for ages

Drive into Boston, and climb a bit at Central Rock Gym in Watertown

Tatto Ramen with my friends (and Fitbit rivals) Dillon and Liz! Parking at the restaurant is a bear, but the food is amazing!

Back to their house, play Gubs, head back toward Medway

Saturday, 24-Nov

Meet Daniel, Erin, Brian, and their dad at Lincoln Woods to do some hiking and climbing

Get a little bit of bouldering, but mostly hike around. Though we do see a really cool / ridiculous group of people driving their tricked out RC cars around.

Lunch at Ollie’s Diner, yay Ollie!

Home for a little bit, then off to Molly’s Apothicary to make… Soap!

Make soap, tons of fun

Visit a bit, check out the shop, enjoy.

Chinese for dinner, then a chill night

Sunday, 25-Nov

Pack up cars, pick up Dunkin’ Donuts on the way, and drive to Aunt Tovah’s house!

Meet & greet, then head to the restaurant – grilled cheese & world famous chocolates… Yes. That is a very excellent lunch.

Hang out at the house, play with the goats, enjoy, then head home

Drive home, it’s a long drive. But we make it! Have leftovers… so many leftovers!

Monday, 26-Nov

Relaxed morning, take a walk down to Galantes for breakfast!

Help move some heavy stuff onto the curb, and go through the garage a little bit.

Go into Boston to see the MFA, Mom meets Kent & Toni, and we see the amazing exhibits: Winnie the Pooh, snack, model ships, propoganda, Singer Sargeant, landscapes

Drive home, Steve’s made an amazing salmon dinner!

Pack up, go through a bajillion old papers… man I had a lot of stuff

Relax and chill, chat and bed

Tuesday, 27-Nov

Up & at ’em, have a lovely breakfast and relax

Finish packing, and relax some more.

Head to Brookhaven, and have a lovely lunch

Drive to the airport and fly home :'(
