A walk to Howth

Standard

Wednesday, 19-Feb-2025

Dear lord we needed to escape Dublin.

The MBA was in full swing, and the second semester was taking a toll on me. It was even starting to wear on Andrea, which is impressive when you consider her legendary resilience to constant strain.

We needed a holiday, and we had a Wednesday free.

Well… We made the Wednesday free. We told our groups that we needed a break, and that we’d be unavailable for 24 hours. We hopped on the train, and made our way out of town to the peninsula of Howth, for a lovely walk by the seaside.

We kept our phones on silent. No classwork, no group messages, none.

That evening, we looked for inns to stay at… not finding anything in Howth, we picked a hotel near the train in Dublin, and enjoyed the rest of our 24 hours away from work, from the apartment, and from the insanity of the MBA.

Seriously. 100% worth it.

A new year’s hike in Bray

Standard

Thursday, 02-Jan-2025

On New Year’s Eve, we made plans to go hiking.

Because clearly, making plans to go hiking is best accomplished while slightly tipsy on good wine and great cheer.

Frankly… I can’t disagree with that, as sarcastic as it may sound. I mean, how many of my adventures during my time with the Northeastern Outdoors club were planned out during a house party? More than I can probably remember, I’d be confident in guessing.

The day came, we met up at the train station (slightly bleary eyed, but awake none-the-less), and Andrea, two friends, a dog, and myself headed South toward the seaside town of Bray. Our goal for the day was an easy seaside hike – Bray Head, a small peninsula / hill jutting out into the Irish Sea. I’d brought snacks, jackets, my camera and my drone… and I was exceptionally excited to be getting out for a legitimate hike to kick the new year off… even if it was a bit of a touristy option.

Pictures show just how gorgeous the Irish coastline is.

Rolling greenery, beautiful seas, and stoic trees soaking in the intermittent sunshine. Irish cows silhouetted against the horizon. A puppy, frolicking in the mud puddle.

…

Yeah. It was a very good start to 2025. I’ve got a good feeling about this year.

Limerick, the Cliffs of Moher, and Galway

Brian and I have been adventuring while he’s here! I had a week off from classes, and while I did have quite a bit of reading to catch up on… I was able to carve a few days off for us to get out of town and into the adventure.

After Oweynagat Cave, we took to the road again – this time, going a bit further out from my fair city of Dublin, all the way to the West Coast of the Emerald Isle. We started out early, taking a beautiful sunrise walk through Stephen’s Green on the way to pick up our rental car before hitting the road toward Limerick, where we aimed to grab some lunch.

A farmer’s market was an absolutely lovely surprise, and so fortified with snacks and mushrooms we hit the road again to the gem of the West Coast – the Cliffs of Moher!

We arrived in the rain – not a surprise, thankfully, and so after a quick armoring of rain gear we were well fortified against the weather and heading out toward the cliffs.

It.

Was.

Gorgeous!

I could try to describe, but… I took pictures. I’ll let them speak for themselves.

After the cliffs, we headed back onto the road, forging our way North toward dinner in Galway. The road met all the expectations and hopes that Ireland suggests; every turn was another glorious view, and every look out the window gave us a vista worth photographing.

Frankly, it made it a bit tough to make quick progress, and Galway saw us arrive a fair bit after dark… not a challenge this time of year, to be fair. It went well, though – we parked, wandered a bit, and even saw a huge art installation of a travelling newt before we settled in for a quick Guinness stew.

The rest of the evening saw us driving home by headlights – taking our time, enjoying the music, and reveling in the mystique and fantasy of the Irish countryside.
